X has started the new year surrounded by controversy, as multiple countries move toward restricting the platform over serious concerns linked to its AI chatbot, Grok. The issue centers on Grok’s ability to generate sexualized and non-consensual images, raising alarms among governments, regulators, and digital safety groups worldwide.
Over the past few weeks, reports revealed that Grok was being used to create explicit, sexualized images of people—regardless of age—based purely on user prompts. At one point, the AI was reportedly generating more than 6,700 sexually suggestive or “nudified” images per hour, a scale that quickly caught international attention.

Authorities in Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada, Indonesia, and Malaysia have all begun reviewing X’s compliance with local digital safety and child protection laws. While Canada later clarified that it is not planning an immediate ban, Indonesia and Malaysia have already blocked access to the standalone Grok app.
An Indonesian government spokesperson described non-consensual sexual deepfakes as a “serious violation of human rights, dignity, and digital security,” signaling that tolerance for such tools is rapidly fading.
X Responds — But Critics Say It’s Not Enough
In response, X restricted Grok’s image generation features to paid subscribers only. However, the company has stopped short of fully disabling nudification or sexualized image prompts—something many experts say would immediately resolve the problem.
Instead, Elon Musk has taken a combative stance, arguing that similar content can be generated using other AI tools and that X is being unfairly targeted because of its outspoken free-speech positioning. He has also suggested that governments are attempting to silence the platform under the guise of regulation.

A Simple Fix — and a Bigger Fight
What makes the situation more puzzling is that the technical solution is straightforward: block nudification and sexualized deepfake prompts in Grok. Many AI platforms already do this successfully.
Instead, Musk appears to be framing the issue as part of a wider culture and free-speech battle—one that could cost X millions of users and significant market trust if restrictions expand further.
